The original lightweight rarefied/sparse Margilan Silk Gauze fabric from Uzbekistan. This unique handmade fabric is undyed, has a natural white color and is sold by the yard or by the metre. Gauze is a lightweight, sheer, and open-weave silk fabric. It is airy, soft, and delicately transparent. Because of these unique characteristics, silk gauze is used across fashion, art, crafts, nuno-felting, wedding veils, silk scarves and specialty textile applications.

Details:

  • Length: by the yard or by the metre
  • Width: available in the following widths: 65 cm (26 in.), 90 cm (35 in.), 115 cm (45 in.), these measurements are approximate and may vary slightly due to hand-made nature of the fabric.

Usage:
Perfect for nuno-felting projects, wedding veils, silk scarves, home decor, fashion, costume design projects and theater stage decorations. Margilan silk brings a beautiful sheen, softness, and unique texture to nuno-felted wearables and wall hangings. The fabric is also known as gossamer silk or butterfly silk. It is Ideal for Nuno felting. When scrunched up it will provide surface texture, when laid flat and integrated, it enhances stability without adding significant weight. It’s also excellent for securing elements like nepps and felted pebbles. Perfect for crafting fine felted garments with an elegant drape.

Margilan silks are famous for their unique natural brilliant pearl shine and a rich luster. Margilan silk gauze has a greater sheen than Chinese silk gauze, allowing you to create beautifully textured designs with brilliant luster while keeping your creations lightweight.

Gauze fabric is prized for its versatility in both textile art and fashion. Its open weave makes it exceptionally well-suited for nuno-felting, eco-printing, and surface design, allowing wool fibers to bond easily and dyes to absorb richly for vibrant, artistic effects. In fashion, silk gauze is commonly used for bridal veils, lightweight scarves, and delicate overlays in dresses, blouses, and eveningwear, where its transparency and graceful drape add dimension without bulk. It's also favored in costume design and layered garments, particularly in theatrical or dance applications that benefit from its airy movement and ethereal visual quality.

Main qualities:

  • Very sheer - ideal for overlays, veils, and layering
  • Open weave - great for felting, dyeing, and breathability
  • Soft drape - flows naturally, doesn't cling
  • Lightweight - adds volume without bulk
  • Natural sheen - elegant finish without being too shiny
