The original Margilan Shoyi 100% pure silk from Uzbekistan is a dense, medium-weight fabric in the Margilan Silk collection, although still relatively light at approximately 44 gsm (10 momme). It is a luxurious natural fabric that has a soft, natural sheen and resembles Habotai Silk in its texture and drape.

Margilan Shoyi is a breathable, smooth, handwoven silk with soft natural sheen. It is ideal for natural clothing, artistic dye work, scarves, traditional garments, textile art, and eco-fashion. Luxurious and nearly weightless, this unique hand-made material emits a delicate sheen reminiscent of pearls. Among all natural fabrics, Margilan Shoyi silk stands out as exceptionally tender, elegant and noble boasting a beautiful pearlescent shine.

This unique handmade fabric is undyed and sold by the yard or by the metre.

Details:

  • Length: by the yard or by the metre
  • Width: available in the following widths: 45 cm (18 in.), 50 cm (20 in.), these measurements are approximate and may vary slightly due to hand-made nature of the fabric.
  • Weight/density: this is a medium-weight dense silk fabric in the Margilan Silk collection - 44 g per square metre (10 momme).

Usage:
Shoyi silk is commonly used in traditional Central Asian garments, such as robes, tunics, and scarves, prized for its breathability in hot climates and its ability to hold natural dyes beautifully. It is also popular in modern slow fashion and artisan clothing, where its crisp hand and semi-sheer quality lend well to lightweight blouses, dresses, and layering pieces. In textile arts, Shoyi is used for natural dyeing, eco-printing, and nuno felting, particularly when a bit more structure is needed compared to ultra-light gauze fabrics. Its handwoven texture and cultural authenticity also make it desirable for custom couture, veils, and minimalist fashion that embraces raw materials and visible craftsmanship.

Main qualities:

  • Lightweight & Breathable - feels airy and cool against the skin, ideal for warm climates.
  • Soft, smooth texture - light and softly flowing with a gentle, fluid drape.
  • Semi-Sheer Weave - suitable for layering, veils, scarves, or as a base for dyeing
  • Subtle Natural Sheen - natural soft glow, with no high-gloss sheen, takes on a soft luster after dyeing or washing.
  • Excellent Dye Affinity - absorbs natural dyes, eco-prints, and botanical pigments beautifully, ideal for textile artists and slow fashion designers.
  • Cultural Authenticity - deeply rooted in Central Asian textile traditions, traditionally used in garments, scarves, and ceremonial wear.
